OPENING PRAYER

O God,
you promise to dwell in hearts that are honest and upright.
Shape us by your grace into a place where You feel at home.
Amen.

REFLECTION

God does not train us in injustice. He’s not up there handing out crooked yardsticks and saying, “Measure away!”

Long before we ever showed up on this spinning blue planet, He had already planned wisdom for our glory. Not for His entertainment. Not for cosmic trivia night. For our glory.

That wisdom was whispered to our ancestors.
It was carved into stone.
It was preached by prophets.
And now—it is spoken by Christ Himself.

Same God. Same truth. Clearer voice.

GOSPEL: Matthew 5:17–37

(From the Sermon on the Mount)

Jesus makes something very clear right out of the gate:

“I did not come to cancel the Law. I came to complete it.”

He isn’t erasing Moses.
He’s finishing the sentence.

The Law was always headed somewhere.
It was pointing to Someone.
And now that Someone is standing on a hillside explaining what it really meant all along.

And here’s where it gets interesting.

Four times in this passage, Jesus says:

“You have heard that it was said…
But I say to you…

That’s not a rabbi offering commentary.
That’s the Divine Authority speaking.

Let’s walk through it.

1. About Anger

The old commandment said: “Do not kill.

Fair enough.

But Jesus says:
Don’t even nurse anger.
Don’t carry grudges like trophies.
Don’t insult your brother and then stroll into worship like everything’s fine.

If there’s division—go fix it.

He doesn’t just forbid murder.
He uproots hostility.

2. About Lust

The Law said: “Do not commit adultery.”

But Jesus goes deeper.

Don’t rehearse sin in your imagination.
Don’t treat people as objects in your private mental theater.

He isn’t just regulating behavior.
He’s purifying vision.

Holiness starts where nobody else sees.

3. About Divorce

The old Law permitted divorce under certain conditions.

But Jesus reminds us that marriage was never meant to be disposable.
It’s covenant, not contract.
Not a reset button. Not a temporary subscription.

He brings us back to God’s original design—faithfulness.

4. About Truth

The Law said: “Do not break your oaths.

But Jesus says:
Live so honestly that you don’t need dramatic vows to prove yourself.

Let your “Yes” mean yes.
Let your “No” mean no.

No verbal gymnastics.
No spiritual fine print.

Just simple, steady truth.

WHAT IS JESUS DOING?

He isn’t raising the bar just to exhaust us.
He’s revealing what heaven is like.

Heaven isn’t just a location.
It’s a state of holy being.

And nothing unholy strolls through its gates.

So instead of dragging our baggage all the way to eternity and trying to sneak it past the angels, Jesus invites us to start unloading now:

  • Drop the grudges.

  • Clear the imagination.

  • Honor your commitments.

  • Speak clean truth.

It’s demanding.

But it’s also freeing.

Because holiness isn’t about external compliance.
It’s about interior transformation.

And the One who commands it
is also the One who gives the grace to live it.

Our Story

That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it—and that’s because it’s HIS STORY!
