The Prayer Boom!

CHUCKTOWN (CR News) — Deacon didn’t get very far in his new book before he felt the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. He was reading Prayer Works! by Matthew Leonard (Our Sunday Visitor Publishing Division, Huntington IN; 2014). Deacon had picked this book because it claimed to help readers “get a grip on their Catholic spirituality.”

Deacon was all in on what Matthew Leonard had to say. He quickly devoured this refreshing book!

The Bible tells us that the prayers of a righteous man availeth much — it gets results (Jas 5:16). It says that we can be bold in Christ, knowing that if we ask anything according to His will, He will hear our prayers. (1 John 5:14).

The Catechism highlights the special relationship we have with the Holy Spirit. Our prayers are in the Holy Spirit as they ascend through Christ to our Father. Those prayers bless the Lord for having blessed us. They also implore the grace of the Holy Spirit which, in turn, descends back down through Christ from our Father. God blesses us.

Simply stated, in prayer, we bless the Lord Who has blessed us. And in return, He blesses us as we pray.

Deacon was unhappy about what was going on in society. He knew that he could not do anything about that personally, but he also understood that, working with God in prayer, much still could be accomplished.

Matthew Leonard reminds us that the saints constantly care for those of us whom they’ve left behind on earth (pg 130-131 referencing CCC 2683). Deacon understood that the faithful on earth have a connection with the saints in heaven. It’s all part the proclamation by Christ of the Kingdom of God.

The old deacon realized long ago that Jesus was (and is) building a Family that is also the Church and a Spiritual Army. God’s Kingdom includes countless creatures who perform many ministerial services. The ministry of God’s Kingdom is not limited to the flesh, as some Christians seem to believe. It actually continues in heaven forever in the spirit.

Prayer has the force of spiritual dynamite as Herman seemed to realize. While the little mouse probably got overly enthusiastic reading Prayer Works!, it really is a wonderful book for Catholics wanting to invigorate their faith. Deacon’s advice …
