A Blah Day

The whole of the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments (Matt 22:40)

Herman wasn’t feeling very excited about life this morning. He didn’t have a lot of energy, and he wasn’t particularly motivated either. He called days like today, “Blah! “

A cup of tea? That didn’t do it for him today. So he opened his Bible and started reading. It wasn’t long before he came across something that interested him. At that point, he stopped reading, closed his Bible, and just sat there thinking.

We don’t know what Herman thought about, of course, but we do know the little mouse’s attitude changed. It wasn’t long before he was ready to tackle whatever waited for him today.

Sometimes, Christians have a way of making things complicated. We really do apologize about that, both to you and to God. You see, that’s not how Jesus approached life. He made everything very simple.

In today’s Bible readings, Jesus said that all of the law (all those rules you hear Christians talking about sometimes) — they all boil down to just two things. And those two things are actually only one thing. According to Jesus, it’s all about love.

In our parish, we’re part of a small Bible study group. Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about each other, and we’ve been learning to love each other too. That doesn’t always come easily, of course. So we often joke about love when we get together.

We say to each other, “I love you, brother,” or “I love you, sister.“ Of course, that’s just the setup. The punchline comes after that.

“But don’t tell anybody!” We add. “If the world ever finds out that this is really all about love, we’d never be able to get a seat in church.”

The truth is, we do want the world to know that it’s all about love, but we don’t always do such a good job showing the love in our everyday life. And that’s a real shame!

Jesus really is awesome, and God’s love is amazing too. If you’re having trouble understanding the Bible, remember that one, little point. It’s all about love. That’s because God is love!

We pray that you might go into this day with faith that flows out of love, even if you don’t call yourself a follower of Jesus. No, we’re not saying that everything about today will be good, but God will make something good out of everything that happens.

Let faith take the “blah” out of your day!

That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it! It’s cool to be Catholic. COOL2B!

In Christ.
