OUR STORY …
Papa was feeling confused and angry early this morning as he checked his social media accounts. He was thankful that his good friend, Octávio, was with him. Neither man could believe some of the things Catholics were spewing online. It sounded as if they were filled with hatred.
“How could this be?” Papa wondered. Octávio had no answers.
Both men had read the research exposing the number of practicing Catholics who did not believe in the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Seventy percent disbelieved this most basic part of our faith — His real presence is with us in our daily bread. Now Papa was seeing more evidence of broken faith on social media. The majority of people who identified themselves as Catholics were not communicating charitably.
The daily readings today gave Papa and Octávio hope. “There is still time for people to turn back to the love of Christ,” Papa thought. “It is not enough to want God’s love in your own life,” the old pontiff considered. “We must also desire to experience His love in relationship with others.”
“Where is that love on social media?” Papa and Octávio both wondered. “Where is there evidence of love among that 70% online?”
Papa and Octávio turned to God and prayed together about broken faith.
THE BIBLE …
In today’s Bible story about the land owner and the workers, Jesus teaches an important lesson. God’s intention has little or nothing to do with fairness. It‘s about mercy. Mercy has the capacity to cover more ground and possess more territory than fairness or justice combined.
When 70% don’t believe in God’s real presence, only 30% understand mercy. And when the Church does not understand mercy, the Church does not know true love.
LIFE GOES ON …
It’s not too late for any of us, but we must get busy with the things in life that are really important. Would you prefer that God dealt with you justly or with mercy? Do unto others in the same manner.
As for me and my house, we seek His mercy.
That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it. It’s cool to be Catholic. COOL2B!
