A Funny Thing Happened

A funny thing happened on the way to heaven. It turned out that God was right, and Satan was in big trouble!

That’s the lesson in today’s Scripture readings. Oh, it doesn’t read exactly that way. But nevertheless, we see a surprise ending. Hananiah, the son of Azzur from Gibeon, was right. But somehow, he still missed the truth!

Optimism is not truth. God is patient, but He is not weak. A day is coming when there will be a reckoning. While we wait for justice, God shows the world mercy and compassion. He gives all of us time to change our thinking and our ways. He calls us to travel in a new direction — the Way of Life And Truth (John 14:6).

In our illustration this morning, Papa is exhorting his friend Giuseppe to tell the world to repent. It’s an old message, but then — the truth is old also. Truth does not change with time or culture.

“Do the right thing, Giuseppe!” Papa seems to be saying. “Tell them to do the right thing too.”

So what is the right thing, you might ask. And what is the punchline that awaits? It is love. Love is the most powerful force in the universe. God doesn’t just love. He is love.

If you seek love, you are seeking God whether you know it or not. And if you think you are seeking God, and there is no love in you, you’re on the wrong path. Love!

It’s cool to be Catholic. COOL2B!

In Christ.
