Sad Trad

SAD TRAD is short for Sacred Tradition, and “Sad Trad” is the only tradition that should ever drive the direction of the Church (CCC #115-119).

We live in a time of endless divisiveness. It’s evident in politics, and it is being introduced into the Church too. There are people out there promoting RAD TRAD, MAD TRAD, BAD TRAD, and all kinds of other Church traditions. Add to that Pope bashing … bishop castigating… and priest criticizing … and people wonder why the world is not turning to the light of the Church in these times of deep darkness.

Social media reviews by Catholics about all the shortcomings of the Church today are becoming more the norm than the exception. They are also becoming a big reason why lost people are not turning in greater numbers to the Church!

We can say without hesitation or embarrassment that this trend is not pleasing to Jesus who is the Head of the Church (John 17:20-21).

Are there leadership problems in the Church today? Yes, without doubt.

Is this the first time in our 2000 year history there has been a problem? No, not even close.

What’s different is that, for the first time in history, ordinary Catholics today have a large megaphone that enable us to shout to the world a message about the Church. And the message people are hearing is that the Church has lost her way.

Implied in this message is that Jesus can no longer steer His Church, build it as He promised (Matt 16:18-19), or protect it. And that’s a very dangerous message!

God didn’t need social media to reveal His great salvific plan to the world. He probably doesn’t need it to bring His Son back as promised either. What He does need and want is that faithful Catholics would catechize rather than criticize. As any old veteran knows, “you’re either part of the solution, or you’re the problem.”

Like most things in life, it’s really very simple. Jesus called you and us to make disciples (Matt 28:18-20). Is what you’re posting online making Jesus and His Church attractive to a world in need of hope and love? Or is it driving them into the arms of Satan?

It’s cool to be Catholic, folks! It really is. COOL2B!

In Christ!
