Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. (Mt 5:17, NABRE)
The exception to the rule is Jesus! The Old Testament was full of rules, and the Jewish leaders continued to add to them. It was a heavy burden to carry. And then, Jesus did something very remarkable. No, He did not change any of the rules. Nor did He eliminate them. Instead, He “fulfilled” all the rules.
Once the rules were fulfilled, it was possible for His followers to move past them.
IN THIS CARTOON …
In this cartoon, we see Herman and his mouse buddy Schwartz. Schwartz is not feeling well, and Herman falls into the same trap that caught the Pharisees when they dealt with Jesus. He responded to Schwartz’ immediate need with “a rule.” He even quoted the source of the rule, Bishop Bob.
Schwartz responded with an inspired comment. Apparently, Bishop Bob was not rigid, and he didn’t teach Herman to be an unrelenting follower of the rules. Herman had learned that there is an exception to every rule. There is always a way out. It is Jesus!
GOING FORWARD …
Let’s be clear. Rules can be good. Rules provide clear guidance, and they can help us make decisions. They also give us boundaries which, in turn, actually set us free to roam anywhere within the boundaries. But their purpose must not be to enslave people or to make the people’s burdens heavy.
No matter what you’re facing today and no matter how helpless it might seem right now, there is hope in Jesus. You can trust in Him. Turn to Jesus with your needs, and don’t forget to thank Him for your gifts.
